Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee - National Institute of Water and Sanitation (SPM-NIWAS), formerly NCDWSQ, is an autonomous institution located in Joka, Kolkata, under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Established to enhance access to safe drinking water and sanitation across India, SPM-NIWAS caters to both rural and urban needs.
Inaugurated on December 30, 2022, by the Hon'ble Prime Minister, the institute spans 8.72 acres and aims to address complex water and sanitation management challenges. It will play a crucial role in implementing the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) and Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), and bridge knowledge gaps in public health engineering and panchayati raj institutions, focusing on holistic management that includes health, law, and public policy.
The institute will prioritize research and development, treatment technologies, and cost-effective solutions for water quality and sanitation, ultimately training professionals to serve as effective public health and utility managers.
